Public Services

The Vernal, Utah Family History Center is a branch facility of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. Centers provide access to "most" of the microfilms and microfiche available in the Family History Library.  Jack and Mildred Seitz are the Directors of the Vernal Family History Center, and invite all residents of the Uintah Basin and it's surrounding areas to utilize its free services to research your family history. Assistant Directors are Jim and Beverly Shewell.

No matter what your religious affiliation, we are pleased to help you in your research.  It is a common misconception that the records we hold are only of those who are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  Indeed, if there is any record worthy of preservation, it is our goal to preserve it, as well as make it available to the public.

Our staff of volunteers are always at hand to help you learn how to do basic genealogy, as well as to help seasoned genealogists who may just be "stumped" and need new resources.

Our center offers:

  • Microfiche and Microfilm Readers

  • Computer Research room with computers linked to high-speed Internet.

  • Computer Classroom available for training classes with  computers linked to high speed Internet.  This room is available for reservations by contacting Mildred Seitz.

  • New Microfilm-Microfiche Digital Scanner, Computer, Printer system capable of burning data to CD's or saving images on jump drives, etc.

  • 5 1/4" Floppy Drive for reading old computer disks!

  • National Burial Index 1538-1760 for England and Wales (not even available at the Salt Lake Family History Library).

School classes, scouts, church classes, community groups, etc., are all welcome to use our facilities.  Please schedule all group activities with Mildred Seitz.

Jim and Beverly Shewell, Assistant Directors, coordinate staff schedules and are responsible for training, as well. Any suggestions or concerns pertaining to staffing or training should be directed to them.

Jan Schroeder serves as Computer Specialist and Webmaster. Computer or Website suggestions or concerns should be directed to her.
